Saturday our flight was delayed from St John half an hour due to thunder strikes in Ontario. A teary farewell to Ellen at the airport (lucky Phyllis was there so she wasn’t alone) and we were off on our next leg of the trip.
Despite the thunder in Ontario, we completely missed it and landed safely [...]

With Phyllis at the wheel on Friday it was always going to be a quick trip-with the speed she drives, time was always going to be on our side. We headed out at a reasonably civil hour with plenty of sites to visit in the back of Ellen’s mind, (it was still a mystery to [...]

Thursday night we were off to a local pub in St John (can’t remember the name) which was somewhat empty but did have karaoke. Surprisingly, Pam only sang one song – and it was the one before we left for the night!
Our new friend Cidy, it turns out, has a great singing voice and she [...]

Postscript – the Belgian work horse that fell at the Market Square, whose name was Jake, suffered a badly damaged leg and had to be put down later on Wednesday. Ellen had just taken a photo of him before he fell. We had hoped that he would be able to stand again, but that was [...]

We didn’t get an early start afterall. We stayed up late with our hosts Ellen and Mary and their neighbour, Cidy playing on the Xbox. We formed a band and played bad rock music until 2am. What a hoot!
Pam sampled the local beer (Molson Canadian, Alpine Summit, Moosehead). Molson Canadian was the winner (thanks Ian for [...]

Still struggling with the time differences, but we were out by midday for a walk around St John township. First stop was the Loyalist Burial Ground then a visit to the city market.
A cruise ship was in port so there were lots of tourists around on a lovely hot day (29 degrees Celsius). Many of the [...]

We had a very late start on Tuesday – crossing over several time zones had finally caught up with us. But after a hearty Canadian breakfast (in the afternoon) and ensuring that the fog had finally lifted, we headed off for a quick tour of the city. We visited the Reversing Falls which are caused [...]

We left the hostel at 4.10am Monday morning for the short shuttle ride to the San Francisco airport (20 mins). The freeway was six lanes (going one way) in places and I was glad I wasn’t the driver! How Americans cope driving on the right side of the road with six lanes is beyond me.
We [...]
