Algonquin Provincial Park was the next leg of the journey on Thursday. A nice sleep-in ensured we were ready for the drive through the park. With eyes alert we kept track of the signs on the side of the road warning us of deer and moose.
A quick stop-off at the visitors centre to pay for our stops and to check which walks were the best to do and we headed off in search of the beavers. Canadians seem to love this word, I wonder why?? Beaver Pond came up on us really quickly. We sprayed ourselves with insect repellent and with cameras in handmade our way down to the pond.
Sure enough we were minutes into the walk and the insects started to attack as if we were a smorgasbord menu, even managing to get us through our hats!!! The lambies were also attacked (we forgot to insect proof them) so nothing was safe from the onslaught.
The workmanship of these critters was evident in all areas of the pond (the beavers that is). Not only did they have a couple of ‘hotels’ in the middle of the pond but they also had a dam on the edge of one section. Jo, the lambies and I were feeling rather disappointed that we hadn’t actually seen one of the architects of these construction sites when a passing tourist explained to us that yes indeed we had seen their wee noses popping out of the water as we walked past their homes. This caused great excitement for us but we were hoping to catch the rest of their bodies before we left, but this was not to be.
Whilst driving down the road, words of warning from the east coast girls rang through my head, “If you see cars parked on the side of the road with their hazard lights flashing, it means there is a deer or moose on or by the road’, and sure enough, ahead of me was a group of cars parked on the side of the road with their hazzard lights on. I pulled over and asked what the commotion was and was informed that not more then 15 metres from the side of the road was a moose having a wee snack.
As you can imagine Jo was out of the car with camera in hand zooming in on said moose, several photos later, it was back on the road to Owen Sound.
All through this trip I have been telling everyone and anyone who would listen to me about how great Jo is at navigating. This I still stand by. But can she get the address right??? “A” does not stand for avenue in Owen Sound. This place has a rather unique way of naming their streets. Numbers!!!! 1st street, 2nd street etc cross over 1st Ave, 2nd Ave, etc. Jo had written Shelly and Beth’s address down incorrectly so we got lost! After several attempts of trying to locate their house, we were finally able to get them on the phone and they came to get us. Yeah!!
They live just around the corner from where we were!
